Empower Women in Sport via Media

Sports has been recognized as a force to make the voices of women heard who are discriminated against by gender stereotypes and prejudices in society. Research shows that women who play sports have positive impact on gender equality in society by demonstrating that they defy the perception of being weak and showing not only their physical strength but also their leadership and strategic thinking. It is emphasized in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals that women’s participation in the sport contributes to the development of women and that Sustainable Development cannot be achieved without the development of women. The European Union’s development goals also emphasized the importance of women’s participation in the sport and policies towards it were produced. In the case of obstacles to women’s access to the sport, there is little or no provision for women’s sports in the media, spokesperson, manager, program provider, etc. in sports media. The lack of space for women in the fields and the creation of a perception that sport is an activity in male domination are fundamental problems. On the basis of the power of the media on social perception, the increase of women’s participation in the sports is also possible by using the media as a tool. With this thought, this project aimed to increase the participation of women in sport by eliminating the gender barriers in the sports world through the media. In Empower Women in Sport via Media project, a 10-day activity in cooperation with 3 partners from Europe and local authorities, and a media institution from Turkey was held. Some of the activities of the project included; the impact of women’s sports engagement on development, the analysis of problems, the potential power of the media and how it can be mobilized, media creation and reporting workshops, exploration of sporting opportunities with sporting events, inspiration from successful athletic women, dissemination to the local public and national print workshops, taking part in a cultural festival that includes the European Sports Week, and the provision of recognition of the Erasmus + program as a disadvantaged group of localities. Workshops such as brainstorming, group exercises, simulations, drama, design, interactive presentations, contests were used in the non-formal education-based activity.
